“I am absolutely in love with this machine! I have had a Singer Curvy for basic sewing for the last 8 years, but I wanted to upgrade to a quilting machine. After much research, I chose the Juki as it had great reviews, and is sturdy enough to be able to sew canvas which I will need in the future. It has NOT disappointed! It is a very sturdy build (which means it does have some weight) which makes for incredibly smooth sewing. I’m used to a machine that vibrates so much my entire workspace bounces. My table stays completely still. Setup was very simple when following the instructions, and it was fun to find all of the little “perks” this machine has that I didn’t know exist. Every issue that I have had with my Juki has been due to user error, and the one time I was SURE it wasn’t me, I contacted Juki support and had a technician solve my problem within hours of emailing. (Hint, the problem was me.) So I now have a very sturdy, high quality machine, and great customer service and support to back it up. Worth EVERY penny!”

Juki’s updated quilting and home deco machine. Powerful 1500 SPM machine, low vibration due to the aluminum die cast frame and with automatic thread cutting. LED lights and one pedal control for speed and trimming system complement this semi industrial sewing machine. Famous stitch quality with true drop feed used by many of the best quilters. This workhorse machine comes with an automatic needle threader, 1/5 inch quilting foot and even feed foot and extended bed table. Up to 12mm foot left, easily hems denim jeans.

Juki HZL-F600 is one of the best Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machines.

$1,049.00 On Amazon

This machine is awesome! I’m a quilter and this had everything I was searching for – large throat space, extension table, walking foot, free motion foot, thread cutter, needle threader, etc. The price was reasonable, the shipping was fast and it worked right out of the box. I’ve only had it for a month but so far I am very pleased and would highly recommend it.”

This is an amazing sewing machine. Solid build quality. Comes with more accessories than I will probably ever use. The table extension is the reason I got this over the 300/400. The DVD video is nicely done and concise and the manual is really well organized with lots of step-by-step illustrations. The auto threader works perfectly. My only complaint is that a few of the included fonts don’t look that great – but that’s not the reason I bought this. I would definitely recommend the Juki Exceed line.”

What an awesome  machine! So far, I’ve only used the #2 and #1 settings for sewing my quilt. The #2 setting automatically gives me a 1/4 inch seam quilt block setting. No more guessing if I have this measurement right for my blocks. The foot pedal is awesome. So easy to push down and I can cut my thread too with it after the last back tack.
The machine comes with ample feet and the extension table is big enough. It is not a loud sewing machine when you sew with it. It is so easy to hear over the machine when you sew and it’s smooth as butter with it’s stitches. I’ve not used the knee attachment because of the type of table I have it on. But it is large enough and long enough for my short knee to use. I’ve attached it to see if it was long enough for me. I’m using cotton quilting thread and did not have to touch my tension, top or bottom. That is another worry off my shoulders. The DVD included it the best starting point. The manual is easy to follow as well. The case has a built – in knee and foot pedal storage area. Good to have this and I know exactly where my spare parts are when I need them. The bobbins are 15J, I have lots of those being a Brother machine owner.
When the thread cutter cuts the thread it leaves about a quarter inch or less thread on the fabric. No more clipping the extra thread left over from my other machines. I just pick up sewing a new area and keep going and this saves me time. I’ve watched videos of this machine on You Tube and the quietness that is demonstrated with this machine does not do it justice. I’m having a hard time getting adjusted to this one aspect. The stitching is straight with no stitches crooked like my other machines. They are neatly straight and snug. You have to see the difference.
For a sewer this machine is love in a box. There is so much difference in performance when compared with my Singer and Brother machines. I’ve also read when it comes to the higher priced machines this beats them hands down. And about the box feed dogs. I read those took some getting used to. Well, I see how much better this type of feeding is for the fabric. All in all, this is an incredible sewing machine.

Juki’s updated quilting and home deco machine. Powerful 1500 SPM machine, low vibration due to the aluminum die cast frame and with automatic thread cutting. This workhorse machine comes with an automatic needle threader, 1/5 inch quilting foot and even feed foot and extended bed table. Up to 12mm foot left, easily hems denim jeans.

The right tool for the job makes all the difference! I started making a quilt for my daughter for a Christmas gift, but ran out of time, partly because I was struggling trying to quilt it with my regular sewing machine. I bought the Juki, and in a few hours I had finished! It may not be a professional job, but I quickly set up the tension, switched between the sewing and quilting feet and settings and got the hang of free motion quilting. I have several other quilts I have pieced that are waiting to be quilted. With this machine, I now know I will finish them! And I definitely will be doing more quilting than I had. I’ve always loved the planning and piecing but despised the actual quilting. No more. Thank you Juki for a well-built, easy-to-use, affordable machine.

 Brother PC420PRW Sewing Machine

“I sew professionally (though not super high volume). After trying for several months to get a new Janome HD3000 to cooperate, I finally threw in the towel and admitted that I shouldn’t have to waste so much time coaxing and begging a brand new machine to do its job! I returned it and decided to go with a Brother (not my first Brother machine). Even though I got dinged a little on a re-stocking fee for the Janome return, I’m still glad I got rid of it and went back to a Brother! This machine is wonderful! I also currently have an industrial, heavy duty Juki machine which I use for super heavy duty sewing, but wanted something that could do light and medium work, plus some decorative stuff. This machine definitely fits the bill. Reading some of the other reviews”

This Project Runway Limited Edition model helps you achieve professional-level results, with a comprehensive set of built-in features and included accessories typically seen only with higher level machines. Select from over 294 built-in stitches; view your stitches, settings and options on the easy-view backlit LCD display; design your own stitches with the exclusive My Custom Stitch feature; and save your custom stitches to the machine’s memory for future use. Plus, the eleven included presser feet help you produce designer-level finishing, more easily, with specialized feet for blind hems, monogramming, quilting and more.

This a nice machine. I read the manual through once and was able to sew on it with confidence. I usually have trouble getting used to a new machine. It’s very quiet and sews like a dream. There are many features that most seamstress’ would love. My favorites are the automatic threader, the adjustable sewing speed (you can go real slow when working on something intricate), the auto thread cutter and the one touch reverse stitch. There are so many more features that I haven’t used yet. I’ve only found one thing I don’t like and that is the automatic presser foot lift and lower feature. There is a metal bar thing that goes under your sewing table and you use your knee to raise and lower the foot. It’s kind of hard to do although I’m sure it would get easier with practice. I just do it manually. This is a solid, well built machine. I was using a $700 Husqvarna. Boy did I get ripped off when I bought that one. This machine can do so much more and was almost half the price. I did a lot of research looking for a new machine. Consumer reports recommended a different “Project Runway” machine. I looked everywhere but couldn’t find one to purchase. I came across this machine and found it was similiar to the other but with more features. So I started reading reviews about it by people who purchased it. I could not find one bad review! That tells me all I need to know. If you’re considering this machine you can buy it with confidence. It is a fantastic sewing machine at a fantastic price!!!

A Best Review

I am happy with this little thing. It’s stable, but doesn’t look like a very durable object. Maybe it won’t last and is not good for bigger projects, but I am less than a beginner. Straight out of the box, I had to watch a few videos for this model on how to thread it. The instructions are not very good or maybe it’s the type of thing you need to see, rather than read about if you have zero experience. I managed to create a little blouse as practice with my first try. The stitches were good. It’s only a straight stitch, and you need to tie it manually at the ends. It’s pretty loud. The pedal is very small, but I actually managed to use it with my foot, not with my hand. It’s a small machine, not bigger than what I imagined. Portable indeed. I think it works well. I managed to sew the different parts of the blouse continuously, without any thread breaking. But while I was testing it, the thread broke a few times – I think because of my fault, I wasn’t yet clear on how to thread it. Has two speeds, but the high speed is not much faster than the low speed. It has a mode where you can use it without pressing a pedal – just turn on and it will sew continuously until you press off. I didn’t use this mode because I was not confident enough. Overall satisfied with this very first try at sewing something on my own at home. It’s got a light and a tiny thread cutter. It comes with 2 bobbins of white thread on it, one extra white and one extra black bobbin, and two empty bobbins for your own colors. For a small portable model, it looks very practical. I am keeping it as a portable back-up and getting a more advanced, not portable model for beginners. A new hobby is born!

The Sewing Machines Types

Mechanical models are still around but more skilled sewers can take advantage of all that electronic and embroidery/sewing models offer. Here are your options.

Mechanical Machines
If you’re an occasional sewer or on a budget, this type should work fine. They require you to manipulate most controls by hand and can handle the basic repairs, hems, simple clothing, and crafts projects.

Electronic Machines
If you sew frequently or can spend more, an electronic model can be a worthwhile investment. These shift many tedious sewing jobs from your hands to computer chips. A typical machine offers touchpad controls, LED screen, an array of presser feet for challenges such as piping and topstitching, and settings for dozens or even hundreds of stitch types.

Embroidery/Sewing Machines
In addition to all of the features and options found in an elaborate electronic machine, you’ll also have the ability to do monogramming and embroidery for projects such as garments, bedspreads, and pillowcases.

The machine holds a hoop under its needles and moves the hoop in all four directions as the needle sews. You start by stretching fabric over a hoop. Then, secure the hoop under the needle. Designs are built into the machine’s memory, or purchased on memory cards, CDs, or data sticks or linked from your computer. A touch screen or computer link lets you position the design and specify colors for design elements. Often machines let you resize, reposition and mirror designs and sound an alert to let you know when to change colors.

Sewing Machine Features

Even the most basic machine should be able to handle a variety of fabrics, from satin to denim and corduroy, without stretching or puckering the fabric or producing loose, loopy stitches. Good task lighting is essential, of course, and there are a number of features to consider.

Automatic Buttonholer
Sew a buttonhole in one step and you won’t need to stop and turn the fabric or manipulate a dial. Some machines allow you to insert the button into a slot so that the machine will sew a buttonhole to fit.

Feed-Dog Adjustment
Some machines allow you to drop the toothy mechanism below the sewing surface to do free-style embroidery or darning.

Good Ergonomics and Controls
The machine should be responsive to pressure on the foot pedal, and not stall or growl when sewing thick fabric or multiple layers. The controls should be easy to reach and manipulate, and the symbols on the machine or LED display should be easy to read. Machines that have more room to the right of the needle provide more space for fabric and your hands.

If you’ll be storing the machine in a closet and hauling it out when you want to sew, look for a machine that’s easy to lift and has a handle on top.

Needle Position
This feature allows you to move the needle, and stitching line, from left to right, and to have the needle up or down when you stop. Needle down makes it easy to lift the pressure foot and turn a corner without a jump stitch.

Needle Threader
It pulls the thread through the eye of the needle and saves you from squinting and prevents frustration.

Presser Feet
Find out how many come with the machine. For basic sewing a multi-purpose foot lets you do straight and zigzag stitches, but you’ll want a zipper foot and buttonhole foot too. An adjustable presser foot regulates how tightly the machine holds the fabric while you sew, preventing puckering in fine fabrics and stretching in knits. You’ll find there are hundreds of specialty presser feet to choose from.

Power Switch
Use it to turn the machine on and off. It’s a safety feature if kids are milling about. If the machine doesn’t have a power switch think about plugging it into a safety strip with a master switch, says the Sewing & Craft Alliance.

Speed Control
Determine the pace at which fabric is fed through the machine, enabling you to sew at a nice, steady tempo rather than stopping and starting.

The number varies wildly, from the basics, such as straight and zigzag, to decorative stitching. When shopping check a machine’s maximum stitch length and width.

Tension Adjustment
You’ll need to change how tight the thread is. When it’s too tight it can result in puckered fabric; if the thread is too loose, the result is loopy stitches.

Top-Load Bobbin
Unlike older machines, in which you had to thread the bobbin in a recessed compartment, many machines now allow you to simply slide open a panel and drop the bobbin in. A clear cover lets you see when thread is running low.

Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Knowing your budget – today you can spend less that $100 or over $10,000 on a machine. Knowing what you can afford is important but not the only factor.
  2. What do you want to make? – Understanding the type of project you are most likely to sew along with the fabrics you’ll most likely use will be important to know. Not every machine handles heavy or thick fabrics well.
  3. Are you new to sewing? – New sewers don’t always know what their doing, (please do not be offended by this statement). I am merely pointing out that when you have issues with your sewing, troubleshooting may be needed. When there are issues, this leads to frustrations, and in many cases the new sewer looses interest because they think they are no good at sewing, when in actuality it might just be the machine can’t do what you want.
  4. Plan ahead. If you don’t know what type of sewing you want to do, make sure your machine can handle a variety of sewing projects. Get as many functions, feet, accessories as you can for the money you are willing to spend.
  5. Test drive several models and brands before you buy. Click on each of the links, and find a shop near you to test drive and ask questions. Top brands to consider include: Singer, Janome, Viking (aka Huskqvarna), Bernina, Pfaff, Brother, Juki
  6. Don’t forget to read reviews. The internet is full of opinionated people. See what others have to say about the machine you want to purchase.
